Summer Camp The 2010 Summer Camp Season is
Things really get exciting during the summer months. Five weeks are devoted to the camping program of the South Georgia Conference and these are always highlights of the summer. A large banner is hung across the entrance of the museum at the start of the Summer Camp season.
From the moment they enter our doors we offer to them an exciting living experience of Methodist history. They are taken on a tour which covers all areas of Methodism. The camp program is lead by an exciting leadership team made up of carefully selected college students. In 2008, we concentrated on three areas; Circuit Riders, the Wesley family and nativities (highlighting our large collection of world wide nativity sets). The campers were involved in a craft program featuring all three of those areas and their winning crafts are then put on display in the museum for a year.
We in the museum view these weeks as a highlight of our year and because many of these youth return year after year. We are always seeking to involve them in a variety of different activities so that their experience here in the museum is different each time they enter our doors. Their excitement is contagious and the staff gets just excited when working with the campers.
In addition to Conference camps, we are also host to specialty groups. Including a group of under privileged children from the Jacksonville, Florida area that come for a two week session along with a very dedicated staff of adult workers. The museum is a part of their schedule while at Epworth. They are taken through the museum in very small groups after we meet with the whole group for fun movies and even singing. The program that brings these children to our door is such a vital ministry, the children come completely free of charge, and all the counselors pay their own way. This program is totally dependent on outside resources for assistance. These children look forward to this as a highlight of their year. They experience things at Epworth and at the museum that they would otherwise not see in their lifetime.
